England appoints Edwards as head coach.

A legendary captain turned coach, Edwards takes charge to rebuild and inspire England after a challenging Ashes campaign

Charlotte Edwards, the former England women’s cricket captain, has been appointed as the head coach of the England women’s cricket team. The announcement was made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on April 1, 2025.

Edwards, who represented England in over 300 matches during her playing career, captained the team for a decade. Under her leadership, England secured two World Cup victories and five Ashes series wins. Since retiring in 2017, she has built a successful coaching career, leading teams such as the Southern Vipers, Southern Brave, Sydney Sixers, and Mumbai Indians.

Expressing her enthusiasm about the new role, Edwards stated, “It means the world to me to have the three lions on my chest once again. Leading England as captain was my life for 10 years, and I will forever be passionate about this team and our legacy.”

Edwards’ first assignment as head coach will be against the West Indies on May 21 in Canterbury. The ECB has indicated that the appointment of a new team captain will be announced ahead of the Women’s T20 World Cup next year and the inaugural women’s cricket tournament at the … .

Edwards succeeds Jon Lewis, who departed following England’s 16-0 Ashes defeat in Australia earlier this year. Her appointment has been met with widespread approval, with former England batter Lydia Greenway remarking that Edwards was the only candidate England should have considered for the role.

Edwards’ extensive experience and deep understanding of the game are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the team as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
